APEX COURT DISMISSES PDP SUIT AGAINST TINUBU. BY GOLD AZOKHOME.

The Apex Court in the land (Supreme Court) has dismissed the PDP suit seeking the disqualification of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima as presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Five-member panel of the Supreme Court held on Friday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lacked the locus standi to institute the suit, ab-initio, adding that the PDP is not a member of the APC.

Before now, the PDP had claimed that Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the provisions of sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The party also argued that Shettima’s nomination to contest the position of vice-president and Borno central senatorial seat at the same time contravened the Electoral Act law.

It would be recalled that PDP and its supporters had expected that the ‘treatment meted out’ on  David Lyon of Bayelsa by the Supreme Court would be repeated on Tinubu.

Tje party recalled that Mr. Lyon of the APC was elected in the Bayelsa gubernatorial poll of 2019 but his election was nullified a few hours to his inauguration, following the disqualification of his running mate over issues bordering on multiple of names. 

It would also be recalled that the spokesman of the PDP presidential campaign council, Daniel Bwala, had expressed high hope on the PDP’s suit on Wednesday, saying only God would determine who will be sworn in as Nigerian president on May 29, 2023.
